The Next In Line

According to Wayne Kemp, Conway Twitty’s 1968 number one, “The Next In line,” was a hard song to write.

Kemp commented, “I wrote that song with my bass player, Curtis Wayne.  We had the melody for the song done for a long time.  It took us at least six months to finish it.”

“Next in Line” entered the country charts August 17th, 1968 and was at the top of the charts the week of  November 1st.

It was Twitty’s 7th charted country song and his first number one.

It was on the charts for 17 weeks.
